What is PicoSure?
We as Asians and South Asians are plagued with the issue of pigmentation. Today, we are going to talk about an amazing, first of its kind, laser called PicoSure.
What is pigmentation? Pigmentation is brown or greyish patches on the skin caused by sun exposure, hormonal imbalances and scarring. This can lead to patchy, uneven and dull looking skin. Although the asian population may not wrinkle as much as our western counterparts, we tend to be more prone to pigmentation. Most of us who have battled pigmentation issues have probably used a Q-Switched laser if you have done any laser lightening in the past.
PicoSure is made from the same company who invented the Q-switch laser but it’s much faster, far more effective and the results are outstanding. PicoSure is the world’s first and only pico second laser that is FDA approved. This means the laser operates in one trillionth of a second. Pico technology allows for particles to be broken into much smaller fragments than Q-switch technology, which results in smoother and advanced lightening. Another great benefit of PicoSure treatments is that they can be used on the body as well. It is very effective to treat stubborn dark areas such as underarms, pubic area, knees, elbows and can even be done and is safe for full body treatments. It can even be used to treat birthmarks!
How it Works?
PicoSure uses a unique wavelength of light that converts laser energy into gentle pressure. This pressure squeezes cells, activating the natural cell signalling process that creates new collagen and elastin without damaging the skin. This laser has two types of hand pieces. One that focuses on lightening and one that focuses on resurfacing, tightening and smoothing. Because of the interchangeable hand pieces you are able to treat multiple concerns in one treatment.
The PicoSure laser sends photomechanical energy into facial pigmentation that shatters it into much smaller Microparticles which the body can process and eliminate. This is done without causing any damage to the surrounding skin. Even if you do not suffer from pigmentation or scarring you still may be able to take advantage of the many benefits of PicoSure treatments. Treatments can diminish the look of pores, fine lines, tightens and brightens skin tone. The overall health and vibrance of your skin can be greatly improved!
What to Expect?
We begin your procedure by prepping the skin with a gentle cleanser to ensure we begin with a clean surface. Numbing cream can be applied to increase patient comfort although it is not routinely needed. This can take up to 25 minutes. Numbing cream is then removed and the skin is further cleansed. Each treatment takes about 15-25 minutes. Additional time is required if the patient wishes to treat the neck and decollate. You may experience slight redness, swelling and heat post treatment. This should clear within a few hours and is very minimal. A cooling mask is applied followed by patient specific products and sun screen. Make up can also be applied immediately after treatment if needed. There is no need to miss work or leisurely activities as you may return to your normal routine immediately. Be sure to protect your skin with sunscreen following your treatment as you may be more susceptible to sun sensitivity and burns.
Are you a Candidate?
PicoSure laser treatments can work on many different skin types, including very light to very dark and everything in between! If you’re above the age of 18, you don’t have any medical issues and you’re not pregnant or breast feeding you are most likely a good candidate for treatments. We do not treat over active acne, however this treatment works wonders for acne scarring and pigmentation. We may recommend a skin care routine prior to beginning PicoSure treatments in order to address the active acne. We may also treat the areas surrounding active acne if there are only a few spots. PicoSure treatments also reduce pore size which results in fewer breakouts in the future! Those with eczema or psoriasis are also candidates, as long as it’s not active eczema on the area we are treating with the laser. We would not recommend treatments to those patients dealing with rosacea or vitiligo. Visit us today to find out of PicoSure treatments are right for you.
What are the few precautions that you need to take care of before you come in for the procedure? Application of any creams that contain acids such as glycol acid, retinoid acid that you may be using for your acne or for a certain amount of pigmentation should be stopped a couple of days before you come in for the procedure. Any acne medication such as Isotrentinoin (commonly known as Accutane) should be stopped a few months prior to treatment as it affects your healing time. Using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer pre and post treatment is highly recommended.
If you have any sunny vacations planned, great! However, we recommend waiting until after you are back to begin PicoSure treatments. You should not have high levels of sun exposure for 2-3 weeks following your treatment as this can effect healing, pigmentation and possibility of sun burns. You may resume your regular daily activities following your treatment but be sure to be wearing an SPF of 30 or higher to ensure you are well protected. Makeup can be applied immediately after treatment if needed, although we recommend waiting to lessen any risk of breakouts. You may also resume your daily skin care routine the following day. You may begin doing facials as early as 10 days after your Pico treatment!
PicoSure is not only an excellent skin rejuvenation treatment it is also the gold standard of laser tattoo removal. It requires fewer sessions than any other laser tattoo removal on the market and can treat a multitude of ink colors.
