Skin Care Tips for the Changing Season

I am sure most of you have changed your closet as we transition into colder weather but have you also transitioned your skin care routine? The changing weather can have many affects on your skin such as dryness, breakouts, clogged pores and more. How does this occur? As we shift from summer to fall the temperature and humidity drop rapidly which in turn result in the skin’s loss of hydration as well.  This can affect the level of oil we have protecting the surface of the skin resulting in transepidermal water loss. Transepidermal water loss is the process of water passing from the dermis through the epidermis and evaporating from the skin’s surface. This lack of water in the skin can lead to cracks, inflammation and dehydration. Moisturizing is a key part of your skin care routine to protect you from the cold and wind that the fall season brings, but are you moisturizing correctly? It is important to understand your skin type in order to properly protect and nourish your skin.

For those with very dry skin we recommend applying a heavier cream formula during the fall and winter months. In the spring and summer you may transition back to lighter formulas. Many people may even experience much more oily and problematic skin in the colder months. This is a result of your skin attempting to combat the dry weather by producing excess serum. This sebum can react with bacteria and dirt resulting in clogged pores and breakouts. For those of you with oily skin we recommend opting for light to medium serum formulas. This ensures the skin is properly protected without over doing it. Moisturizing the correct zones is very important for those of you with combination skin. This skin type tends to be oily in the t-zone and drier on the outside portions of the face. We recommend combining the fall skin care routine, applying heavier cream formula moisturizers on the cheeks and sides of the nose while applying lighter gel formula serums to the middle of the chin, nose and forehead. This ensures the skin is balanced with an adequate barrier on all portions of the face.

One more important note to remember, no matter your skin type or the season; always apply a daily sunscreen!
